Senja municipality is a new and exciting municipality in Troms and Finnmark county, which was established on January 1, 2020 by merging Berg, Lenvik, Torsken and Tranøy municipalities. The municipality includes the island of Senja and the peninsula between Gisundet and Malangen / Målselvfjorden. Senja is Norway’s second largest island, and has a varied landscape with mountains, fjords, forests, coast and farmland.
Senja municipality has just under 15,000 inhabitants, and is one of the largest in fisheries and seafood in Norway. The municipality also has an active private sector in areas such as trade, service, construction, tourism and culture. The municipality has eight inhabitants per square kilometer, and with that the highest population density in the county after Harstad, Tromsø and Sørreisa. The population has in recent years remained stable.
Senja municipality is known for its beautiful nature and many hiking opportunities. Throughout the municipality there are well-facilitated and marked hiking and ski trails, both for the simple trips and those that can be more challenging. The municipality also has several attractive tourist destinations, such as the national park Ånderdalen, national tourist route Senja, Senja Trollpark, Senjastua cultural center and many beautiful beaches.
Senja municipality has a rich and diverse cultural life, varied sports offers and great opportunities for outdoor activities. For Senja as an attractive municipality, culture and cultural participation are important for experience, community and source of knowledge, and contribute greatly to a positive reputation of the municipality. The municipality has several cultural centers and cinemas, which arrange concerts, performances and events from all over the country, and from the local cultural life. The municipality also has several festivals and larger cultural events, such as Senjahopen Rock Festival, Kråkeslott Festival, Senja Food Festival and Senja Winter Festival.
Senja municipality has a well-developed school and kindergarten offer, with 18 primary schools, two secondary schools and 19 kindergartens. The municipality also has a good cooperation with UiT Norway’s Arctic University in Finnsnes. The municipality has a high focus on quality in education, inclusion and adapted education for all students.
Senja municipality is a municipality with many opportunities for you who want to live and live in a beautiful, varied and lively local community.
