A boundaryless municipality

Alta is a municipality in Troms and Finnmark that has a lot to offer for both residents and visitors. With a rich history, a varied business sector, a lively cultural life and a fantastic nature, Alta is an attractive place to live and work. 

Alta has over 21 000 inhabitants and is the largest city in Finnmark. The municipality stretches from fjord to plateau, and includes parts of the islands Stjernøy and Seiland . Alta is known for its rock carvings that are on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, and for being one of the best places to see the northern lights. 

Alta has a diverse business sector with both public and private actors. The municipality has among other things a large share of the county’s industrial production, as well as businesses in trade, service, transport, tourism, education and research. Alta also has a university center that offers higher education. 

Alta is a cultural hub in the region, with a rich offer of festivals, events, concerts, exhibitions and performances. Some of the most popular events are Alta Live, Halddemarsjen, Alta Soul & Blues Festival, Høstsprell, Aronnesrocken and Finnmarksløpet . Alta also has an active sports and outdoor life, with opportunities for cycling, snowmobile, whale safari, ice hotel and fishing . 

Alta is a municipality that invests in the future, with a focus on climate, environment, security and preparedness. The municipality has good public services, with several schools and kindergartens. Alta is also a young city with an average age of 36 years.
