Dønna is an island municipality on the Helgeland coast in Nordland, known for its breathtaking nature and rich history. With around 1,450 residents¹ living across the islands of Dønna, Løkta, and Vandve, the administrative centre is located in Solfjellsjøen¹. Dønna is connected to its neighbouring municipality, Herøy, by a bridge².
The landscape ranges from fertile farmland and coastal scenery to forest and striking mountains. Among them stands Dønnamannen, rising 858 metres above sea level—a prominent landmark in the region². A historical highlight is Dønnes Church, dating back to the 13th century².
Dønna’s cultural life is built on community spirit and volunteer engagement. The municipal library has branches in Solfjellsjøen and Løkta³, while Dønnahallen—a multi-purpose arena—serves as a key venue for sports and local events⁴. Outdoor life is a natural part of everyday living, with excellent opportunities for hiking, fishing, and boating¹.
The local economy is rooted in agriculture, particularly livestock farming. While traditional fishing has declined, aquaculture—especially salmon, cod, and halibut farming—remains a vital industry. Retail, services, and the public sector also provide important employment. Tourism is steadily growing, with Dønna’s unique blend of natural beauty, historical sites, and coastal adventures making it a rewarding destination—and an ideal place to live for those who value both work-life balance and closeness to nature.⁵.
