Flakstad is a gem in Lofoten that offers stunning nature, rich culture and exciting business. The municipality consists of Flakstadøya and the northern part of Moskenesøya, as well as several smaller islands, islets and reefs. Flakstad has a long history as a fishing village and has preserved many of its traditions and characteristics. Flakstad has about 1400 inhabitants and an area of 177.3 km². The municipal center is Ramberg, which is located on the west side of Flakstadøya. The name Flakstad possibly comes from “flag”, which means rock wall . The old name of Flakstadøya is Vargfot, which may indicate that there were wolves here in earlier times.
Flakstad is a municipality with a varied and exciting business sector that builds on local resources and traditions. Fishing is the main industry in Flakstad, and the municipality has several fishing villages, fishing ports and aquaculture facilities. Flakstad also has a rich cultural life with crafts, art and music. Tourism is a growing industry in Flakstad, which offers many attractions and experiences for visitors, such as Rambergstranda, Nusfjord, Flakstad church and Lofotr Viking Museum. Flakstad is an attractive municipality to work in because it has good framework conditions for the business sector, an active local community, beautiful nature and a good cooperation with neighboring municipalities
Flakstad has many cultural monuments and attractions that testify to the municipality’s history and identity. Flakstad church is an octagonal wooden church from 1780, which is one of the oldest churches in Lofoten. Nusfjord is one of Norway’s oldest and best preserved fishing villages, and is a living museum with accommodation options. Glasshytta on Vikten is a popular art gallery that makes glass art from sand from the beach. Smeden i Sund is a workshop and museum that shows how the blacksmiths made fishing hooks and tools in the old days.
Flakstad also has a fantastic landscape that invites outdoor activities and recreation. Rambergstranda is a long and beautiful sandy beach that is perfect for swimming, surfing and sunbathing. Fredvang is an idyllic area with rorbuer, campsites and hiking trails to among others Kvalvika and Ryten. Skagsanden is another lovely sandy beach with a view of the mountains. Flakstadfjellet is a high mountain that gives panoramic views of the islands and the sea. Nappstraumen is a strong tidal current between Flakstadøya and Vestvågøya that is popular among sport fishermen.
Flakstad has good infrastructure that makes it easy to travel to and from the municipality. European road 10 runs through all of Lofoten and connects Flakstad with the neighboring municipalities Vestvågøy and Moskenes.
