Gratangen municipality is a small but beautiful municipality in Troms and Finnmark county, located by the fjord Gratangen and its inner part, Gratangsbotn. The municipality has approx. 1070 inhabitants12 and an area of 229 km². Gratangen has a rich history, a varied business life and an active cultural life. Gratangen was separated from Ibestad municipality in 19261, and has since had a decline in population. However, the municipality has many measures to increase settlement and well-being, including through municipal housing construction, nursery development, broadband development and business development. Gratangen also has a good selection of public services, such as schools, health centre, library, cultural center and sports facilities.
Gratangen has a diverse business community, with both the public and private sectors. Agriculture is an important industry in the municipality, with both milk production, meat production and sheep farming. There are also several companies within the building and construction industry, trade, service, tourism and culture. Some examples of private companies in Gratangen are Gratanglaks AS, which farms salmon and trout, Gratangens Mekaniske Industri AS, which produces steel structures for offshore and land-based industry, Gratangens Fjellhotell, which offers accommodation, food and activities for tourists, and Gratangens Kulturverksted, which organizes concerts, theater performances and courses.
Gratangen also has a lot to offer for those interested in culture and nature. The municipality has several cultural monuments from the Second World War, such as the Tyskerbarkka on Årstein, the Elvenes war memorial park at Elveneset and the Labergdal tunnel at Laberg. There are also several hiking opportunities in the municipality, both along the fjord and in the mountains. A popular hiking trail is Ti på tur i Gratangen, which consists of different hikes with varying degrees of difficulty. If you want to experience something special, you can visit Northern Norway’s largest cave, Råvasshula, located in the mountain Råvasskollen1. Gratangen also has several festivals and events throughout the year, such as the Gratang March, the Fjellvåk Festival, Gratangsdagan and the Christmas Market.
