Hasvik municipality is a beautiful and varied municipality located in Troms and Finnmark county. The municipality consists of three urban areas: Hasvik, Breivikbotn and Sørvær, as well as parts of Sørøya and Stjernøya. Hasvik has a rich natural and cultural life, with many opportunities for outdoor activities, fishing, hunting and experiences. The municipality also has an active business sector, with a focus on fish industry, tourism and public sector.
Hasvik municipality has 1024 inhabitants as of 2nd quarter 20191, distributed over an area of about 555 km2. The municipality borders Hammerfest, Alta and Loppa, and has good transport connections with plane, bus, ferry and speedboat. The municipality has two schools (Hasvik school and Breivikbotn school) and three kindergartens (Hasvik kindergarten, Breivikbotn kindergarten and Sørvær kindergarten).
The fish industry is the most important industry in Hasvik, with companies such as Lerøy Norway Seafood AS and Nergård AS that operate filet and conventional industry in all three urban areas. In addition, the municipality has a varied private business sector, with among other things trade, service, construction and engineering, transport and travel. The municipality also has a large public sector, with employees in health, school, kindergarten, administration and technical operation.
Hasvik municipality has many attractive tourist destinations, which offer nature experiences, cultural history and local food. Some examples are:
Sørøya, which is Norway’s fourth largest island and has a varied landscape with mountains, valleys, forest and coast. Sørøya is known for its rich animal and bird life, as well as its good fishing for cod, saithe, haddock and halibut. Sørøya also has several attractions, such as Sørøy Museum, Sørøy Church, Sørøy Lighthouse and Sørøyrocken Festival.
Stjernøya, which is an island with exciting geology and history. Stjernøya has several nature reserves, such as Stjernsundet Nature Reserve, Stjernøya Nature Reserve and Stjernøykalven Nature Reserve, which protect different types of vegetation, bird and animal life. Stjernøya also has an active mining community, which extracts nepheline syenite.
Breivikbotn, which is the municipal center in Hasvik and has a cozy center with shops, cafes, hotel and guesthouse. Breivikbotn also has an idyllic harbor with boats and fish processing plants. Breivikbotn hosts several events during the year, such as Breivikbotn Days, Breivikbotn Martna and Breivikbotn Christmas Market5.
