Kvæfjord municipality is located on Hinnøya in Troms and Finnmark, and is the westernmost municipality in the county. The municipality has an area of 512.7 km2 and a population of 2,866 (2023). The municipal center is Borkenes, which has 1,389 inhabitants .
Kvæfjord is known for its lush nature and its long agricultural traditions. One of the trademarks is the juicy strawberries that are grown in the light from the midnight sun. The municipality also has several museums that convey different parts of local and national history, such as Sør-Troms museum, Trondenes historical center and Kvæfjord war memorial museum .
For the outdoor enthusiast, Kvæfjord has many hiking destinations, from easy hikes such as the cultural trail Skallen-Rå or a walk over Kveøya, to demanding peaks such as Horntindan and Middastinden . The municipality also has several nice beaches, fishing lakes and boat harbors. Kvæfjord is also a popular destination for cyclists, who can explore the many roads and trails in the municipality.
Kvæfjord has a rich cultural life, with many associations and organizations that offer activities for all age groups. The municipality has among other things a library, a cinema, a cultural school, a youth house and a senior center. Every year there are several festivals and events in Kvæfjord, such as the Strawberry Festival, Kveøyadagene, Kulturuka and UKM (Young Culture Meets) .
Kvæfjord has a varied business sector, with both public and private sector. Agriculture is still an important industry in the municipality, with production of strawberries, potatoes, vegetables and milk. Other industries that contribute to employment and value creation in Kvæfjord are among others trade, service, construction, industry, fish farming and tourism.
Kvæfjord has a good infrastructure, with road connection to Harstad in the east, Tjeldsund and Lødingen in the south, and Sortland in the west and north. The municipality also has an airport at Skånland, which is located about 20 km from Borkenes. Kvæfjord also has a well-developed school and kindergarten offer, with three primary schools, one secondary school and five kindergartens.
