The municipality consists of 365 islands and islets, and has about 500 inhabitants . Røst is known for its rich bird and fish life, its beautiful nature and its exciting history. In this article, we will take a closer look at what Røst has to offer of interesting facts, tourist destinations, infrastructure, cultural life, festivals, events and business. 

Røst has a long history as an important fishing village and trading place. Already in the Middle Ages, Røst was a center for dried fish production and export. In 1432, the Italian nobleman Pietro Querini landed on Røst after a shipwreck, and his account of life on the island is one of the oldest written sources about Norway. Røst has also been a refuge for artists such as Edvard Munch, Dagfinn Bakke and Karl Erik Harr. 

Røst has many attractions for tourists who want to experience the island’s nature and culture. One of the most popular activities is to visit the bird cliff on the island Vedøy, where you can see thousands of puffins, sea eagles, auks and other seabirds. You can also take boat trips to the smaller islands, such as Skomvær lighthouse, which is Norway’s westernmost point. Røst also has several nice hiking trails that suit all ages and levels. 

Røst has a well-developed infrastructure with roads, airport, express boat connection, health center, school, kindergarten, library, shops and accommodation options . Røst also has an active cultural life with several associations, clubs and organizations that arrange various activities for residents and visitors. Some of the most famous events on Røst are Querini Days, which celebrate the Italian explorer, Røst Song Festival, which gathers musicians from all over the country, and Puffin Festival, which marks the start of the puffin season. 

Røst has a varied business sector with a focus on fishing and aquaculture. Around 80 percent of the jobs on Røst are linked to these industries. Røst is especially known for its production of skrei (migrating cod) and lumpfish (a type of cleaner fish) . In addition, Røst has several small businesses in tourism, crafts, trade and service.
