Sortland is a municipality and a town in Vesterålen in Nordland. The municipality has about 10,000 inhabitants and is the 159th largest in area in Norway with 722 square kilometers. Sortland is known as “The blue city by the sound” after an initiative to paint all buildings in shades of blue. Sortland is a regional center for Vesterålen with a rich cultural life, varied business sector and beautiful nature.

The municipality borders Øksnes, Andøy, Kvæfjord, Lødingen, Hadsel and Bø. Sortland has a varied landscape with mountains, valleys, forests, rivers, lakes and coastline. The municipality has a typical coastal climate with mild winters and cool summers.
Sortland has a good offer of schools and kindergartens for children and young people. The municipality has 11 primary schools, 2 secondary schools and 14 kindergartens. In addition, the municipality has a folk high school and a college department.
