Tjeldsund municipality is a municipality in Troms and Finnmark county, located north of Ofotfjorden. The municipality consists of Tjeldøya, a part of Hinnøya and the northern part of the peninsula between Ofotfjorden, Ramsundet, Tjeldsundet and Vågsfjorden. The municipality has an area of 775 square kilometers and 4,201 inhabitants . Tjeldsund has a varied landscape with mountains, forests, sea and islands. The municipality has a rich cultural life with, among other things, Tjeldsunddagan, an annual festival with music, dance, art and food. The municipality also has several tourist destinations such as Tjeldøy church, Ramsund naval station, Norway’s fire school and Kongsvikdalen national park .
Tjeldsund municipality has a diverse economy with public sector, small industry, farms, fishing, banking, transport and catering. The municipality has good infrastructure facilities with road, bus, express boat and airport nearby. The municipality also has a good education offer with four schools and four kindergartens. Tjeldsund municipality is part of Hålogalandsrådet, a regional council that cooperates on common challenges and opportunities. The municipality is also part of the management area for Sami languages, which gives rights to Sami language and culture.
