Tromsø municipality is the ninth largest municipality in Norway and the most populous in Northern Norway. The municipality has 78 162 inhabitants as of the 2nd quarter of 2023 and comprises several islands, including Tromsøya, Kvaløya, Ringvassøya and Rebbenesøya. The municipality has an area of 2558 km².
Tromsø is known as “The Paris of the North” and “The Gateway to the Arctic” because of its location, history, culture and nature. The city is an important center for research, education, trade and tourism in the northern regions. Tromsø has many attractions, such as Polaria, The Arctic Cathedral, The Cable Car, The Polar Museum and Tromsø Museum. The city also has a rich cultural life with festivals such as The Northern Lights Festival, The Bukta Festival, Tromsø International Film Festival and Tromsø Jazz Festival.
Tromsø municipality has a varied economic structure with public sector, trade, service, fisheries, aquaculture, oil and gas, tourism and knowledge-based industries as the main industries. The private sector in Tromsø consists of many small and medium-sized enterprises that contribute to innovation and value creation. Some examples of private enterprises in Tromsø are Mack Brewery, Sparebank1 Nord-Norge, Hurtigruten, Telenor Maritime Radio and Norinnova.
Tromsø municipality has a well-developed infrastructure with roads, bridges, tunnels, airport, port, railway and public transport. The municipality also has a good offer of schools and kindergartens for children and young people. There are 35 primary schools, 9 secondary schools and 2 colleges in the municipality. In addition, the municipality has the University of Tromsø – Norway’s Arctic University which is the largest university in Norway measured by the number of students.

The municipality also has a beautiful and varied landscape with mountains, fjords, forests and islands.
