Vefsn municipality is a beautiful and varied municipality on Helgeland in Nordland county. The municipality has about 13 400 inhabitants, and most of them live in Mosjøen, which is the municipality’s administrative center and “The City in the Middle of Norway”. The municipality stretches from Vefsnfjorden in the west to high mountains, caves and rivers in the east. Vefsn has a rich and diverse cultural life, with festivals, concerts, cultural school and Vefsn-Ensemblet. Some of the most famous festivals are Byfesten, which is the biggest happening in summer-Mosjøen, and Lytt på nytt, which is a festival for contemporary music. Vefsn also has many attractive tourist destinations, such as Sjøgata, which is one of Norway’s longest wooden house rows, Dolstad church, which is one of the oldest wooden churches in Northern Norway, and Helgelandstrappa, which is a spectacular staircase with 3000 steps up to Øyfjellet.
Vefsn has a varied business sector, with both trade, tourism, industry, agriculture and public sector. The municipality has several large companies, such as Alcoa Mosjøen, which produces aluminum, Helgeland Kraft, which delivers electricity to the whole Helgeland, and Mosjøen Aluminiumsverk, which is one of the largest employers in the region. Vefsn also has an active local business sector, with many small and medium-sized businesses in different industries. The municipality has a good cooperation with the business sector through Vefsn Næringsforum, which is an interest organization for the businesses in the municipality.
Vefsn has a good infrastructure, with both road, rail, airport and port. The municipality is located along E6, which is the main road between south and north in Norway. Mosjøen station is the terminus for Nordlandsbanen, which goes from Trondheim to Mosjøen. Mosjøen airport is located about 10 km outside the city, and has daily flights to Oslo, Bodø and Trondheim. Mosjøen port is an important port for freight and passenger traffic on Helgeland.
Vefsn has a good education offer, with 11 primary schools and 2 secondary schools. The municipality also has 12 kindergartens, which offer a safe and stimulating environment for the children.
