Vestvågøy – The heart of Lofoten Vestvågøy is a municipality in Lofoten in Nordland that has over 11 000 inhabitants . The municipality includes Vestvågøya and several smaller islands and islets in the sea areas around. Vestvågøy has a rich history that dates back to the Viking Age, when the island was called Lofotr. Today, Vestvågøy is a modern and diverse community that has a lot to offer for both residents and visitors. 

Vestvågøy is a paradise for nature and outdoor enthusiasts. Here you can experience everything from high mountains to beautiful sandy beaches, from idyllic fishing villages to exciting cultural attractions. Some of the most popular tourist destinations in Vestvågøy are: 

  • Hauklandstranda, which is voted the most beautiful beach in Europe by Lonely Planet. 
  • Himmeltinden, which is the highest mountain on Vestvågøy and offers amazing views in all directions. 
  • Lofotr Viking Museum, which is a living museum that shows how the Vikings lived and dwelled on the island. 
  • Unstad, which is one of Norway’s best surfing spots and offers both waves, courses and equipment rental. 

Vestvågøy is also a significant agricultural municipality and has the largest agricultural area in Nordland together with Brønnøy. Agriculture is dominated by livestock farming, and most of the areas are used for grass production and grazing land. In addition, Vestvågøy has a varied business sector that includes fishing, aquaculture, trade, service, industry and tourism. The municipality has an active cultural life with several festivals, events and associations that contribute to well-being and cohesion. 

Vestvågøy has a central geographical location in Lofoten, with a short distance to both Svolvær and Å. The municipality has good infrastructure with road, airport, coastal express port and fast boat connection. Vestvågøy also has a well-developed school and kindergarten offer with 11 primary schools, 2 secondary schools and 17 kindergartens.
