Marie, what on earth makes a girl choose a job as a blasting engineer?
– I probably grew into it. The interest in construction and civil engineering has always been there, and since this is a family business, it was natural to explore different areas. Blasting was what I liked the most. I find it exciting to stand out a bit, and blasting is definitely the most thrilling aspect of it, she laughs.
Describe what your job entails
– First of all, we need to remove loose materials to reach solid rock. Based on the conditions, I create a drilling plan/blast plan. We drill the necessary holes according to a specific pattern, and then I gather dynamite (Marie simply calls it “mit”) and detonators, and load all the holes. Then I assess the conditions, whether roads need to be closed, people need to be moved away, and so on. Finally, we place mats or nets if necessary, before I set off the blast. It’s always exciting when we detonate, but as long as everything is done correctly, there’s nothing to be afraid of. And of course, the biggest charges are the best, says Marie with a smile.
What are your plans going forward?
– I have plans to pursue a vocational college education eventually. That would involve an additional 3 years of schooling to become an engineer. Apart from that, it’s about gaining more experience and preparing myself to eventually take over the family business.
Why do you enjoy Northern Norway?
– The people. Up here, there are incredibly friendly people. Everyone is smiling and open, and genuinely wishes well for others. It’s easy to get to know people, they don’t judge, and you could say there’s a unique open-mindedness among the people here. I encounter very few uptight individuals.
Additionally, it’s the nature, it’s simply amazing. And everything is so close by. I really enjoy being here and couldn’t imagine a better place to live.
What do you do in your free time?
– I work a lot, so I don’t have a lot of free time. But I enjoy going for walks with my dog, spending time in the mountains, and being outdoors in general where I live.
What advice do you have for others who wants an exiting and fulfilling job?
– Do what you want to do! Don’t worry about what others say or think about your choices. You only have one life, so go for it. I’m rooting for you! Personally, I have received a lot of positive feedback for being a blaster, and the vast majority of people are very supportive of having more women in the construction and building industry. The environment up here is very open and inclusive.
We thank Marie for the chat before she rushes off to her next blasting assignment.
